Varpinge Golfcourse
9-HOLE LINKS-STYLE PUBLIC COURSE IN LUND
The organic golfcourse at Värpinge !require sheep as a "management-tool"
Varpinge Golfcourse is a 9-hole links-style public course with par 34/68. It is designed by the well renowned swedish golfcourse-architect Tommy Nordstrom and it is situated in the western part of Lund. For more information on Lund and its sights, please link to Tourist in Lund .
Varpinge is perfect when you want an interesting golfing experience with full length holes but only have a limited amount of time ! If you are playing the course when it is not so busy a round takes approximately 1½ hours. It is also possible to rent clubs.
When we decided to build the course we wanted to build it with the highest quality not only in the materials but also when planning and designing. Consequently great concern has been taken to the environmental impact of the course and our vision is a golfcourse that conforms to the thoughts of permaculture. Right from the beginning we have been members of the american environmental organization Audubon International ( www.audubonintl.org ). We have, as the first golfcourse in Sweden and third in Europe, recieved Full Certification within the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System for Golf Courses and we have also recieved Certificate of Achievement for Environmental Planning.
Our aim is a pesticide-free golf course. We have tried to take all the now known factors in consideration when planning and building the course to minimize the need for pesticides. We have now, after 10 years of pesticidefree management come to the coclusion that it is possible but we require the aid of sheep in controlling the weeds. dandelion and clover becomes a problem over time, if unattended.
The area where the course is situated is also scattered with stone- and bronze-age archeological finds and this made our planning even more diffucult but also more interesting and rewarding.
The roughs are sown with fine fescues (festuca rubra), fairways are sown with Kentucky Bluegrass (poa pratensis) and fine fescues and finally the worldclass greens are sown with a blend of L-93 and Providence creeping bentgrass (agrostis palustris).
RainBird´s fully automatic irrigation has been installed, with the intent of being used as seldom as possible to aid the fine grasses.
Our greens are, as the first course in southern Sweden, constructed in strict accordance with the USGA specifications for sandbased putting greens and we continually mow them with walk-behind mowers for that extra championship quality.
The scorecard can be seen under "BANAN" where all the lengths are in meters.
The course and practice range is open daily from mid-march until mid-november and the greenfee ranges from 160 SEK to 250 SEK.
