Värpinge Golfbana Recognized for Environmental Excellence

CONTACT: JOELLEN ZEH, STAFF ECOLOGIST
LUND, SWEDEN – Värpinge Golfbana has achieved designation as a ”Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), the educational division of Audubon International. Per Håkan Rasmusson, Owner, has led the effort to obtain sanctuary status on this course and is being recognized for Environmental Stewardship by Audubon International. Värpinge Golfbana is the first course in Sweden, the third course in Europe, and the 355th in the world to receive the honor.

”Värpinge Golfbana has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,” said Joellen Zeh, Staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

”To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas,” explained Zeh. “These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.”

”We are extremely honoured for both the recognition and the company of other distinguished golf clubs which have recieved this recognition”, stated Rasmusson. ”The work with the environmental impact of our golf course does not end with this designation. The true work actually begins now. We feel, however, that we have a fantastic platform to work from. As humans we have an obligation to wisely administer our environment on a long-term basis. ’We have not inherited the earth from our ancestors , we are only borrowing it from our children and grandchildren.’ I encourage everyone to visit our webpage at www.varpingegolfbana.se to learn more about the golf course.”

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Canada, and Europe have also achieved certification in the program. Audubon certified courses in Europe also include: Valderrama Golf Club in Cadiz, Spain and Loch Lomond Golf Club in Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

In addition to golf courses, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System also provides programs for schools, individuals and businesses.
